Old Fashioned Buttermilk Cake

1 c. butter, softened
2 c. sugar
4 eggs, separated
3 c. flour
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
2 tsp. vanilla


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream together butter, sugar and egg yolks until creamy and light. Add flour, cream of tartar, baking soda alternately with buttermilk and vanilla. Beat egg whites until fluffy, fold into batter. Pour into greased 10 inch tube pan or bundt pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
